How much does it cost to educate a child in Uganda?

The total cost for the whole year per child in a primary (elementary)  school is approximately $400.00. That includes the fees, books and basic medical expenses plus all other items needed in an academic school year.

The secondary level costs more. To cover the needs of one child for a whole year, it costs approximately $900.00 for the first year. These are fees, books, basic medical care and school requirements.

How are children chosen?

The criteria for choosing a child for help are as follows:

a)     The child has to be an orphan whose parents died of HIV/AIDS or died in the genocide of Rwanda.

b)     The child is in need of assistance because no capable distant relatives are able to meet the child’s needs.

c)     The child has to be able to follow any formal educational procedures, either academic or practical.

d)     The child has to be assessed to have the will and desire to receive assistance and to become part of the bigger family of COTREAS.

How will you be able to do all this work?

The work is huge for a young organization like COTREAS. We are going to depend, first and foremost, on the good will of our readers and the people we talk to. We intend to reach out to several individual organizations for help. In the future, we shall have to use the media for educating people to the plight of these orphans

How is the money going to be accounted for?

We currently have two offices, one based in the USA and the other in Uganda. All the money will be sent to Uganda from the USA office. The committee in Uganda has an accountant who will see to the budget for the needs of the kids. The school fees will be paid directly to the schools where our orphans will be studying. Some money will be available for immediate needs, for example, in case of sickness. Checks shall bear the signatures of three persons as a guard against any possible abuses. All expenditures will be recorded and presented, at the end of every fiscal year, to the two offices, both in USA and Uganda.   This way we shall see to it that each penny is properly accounted for and used for the purpose it was donated.

How are you to cover the costs of running the organization?

We are dedicated to keep the cost of running this organization as low as possible. We have no one on salary. Everything is done on a voluntary basis. The only expenditures we have incurred so far are for normal office expenses, such as postage, telephone, paper and printing bills.

How many children (orphans) do you have?

At present we have a total of seventeen children in our care, waiting for immediate funding. They are in several schools struggling to make ends meet. Our target is to have two hundred children in our care. If we get enough funds, we have the idea of expanding the assistance to many others.

What numbers are we talking about?

In Uganda alone, statistics give a figure of 1 million orphans whose parents died of HIV/AIDS. Out of these one million need urgent help, most of them are of school age. This is where we come in. In Rwanda the situation is not better. There are about 200,000 children who were orphaned by the genocide. We know we cannot take care of all these children. Our goal is to help where we can and make a difference in the lives of as many as possible.

What is COTREAS?

COTREAS is merely an abbreviation of Come to the Rescue Association.

 COme To the REscue ASsociation.

The one word description for the organization makes it more informal, like a family name, which is the feel of our association.

Why do you not allow me to personally sponsor a child?

While other organizations have used this approach, it can cause jealousy and hard feelings among the children if one child gets attention from his or her sponsor and another doesn’t or if one child isn’t picked to be paired with a sponsor. So we decided that as a family based organization we would try to give the children that concept by helping the most needy and sharing everything as equally as possible.

Can I communicate with the children?

Yes, you can email or mail letters to our address and we will include them in our newsletters to the children, The COTREAS Family Vision. For the children’s safety and security, we do not allow direct communications.
